Maitland, was born in Madras (now Chennai), son of Thomas Moore-Lane, who was an F.R.C.S., Oculist and Surgeon, and became Physician to the Nawab. Maitland's mother, Eliza, nee Thompson, was born in Wexford. (Thomas was also born in Wexford.) The couple married in 1824, in Madras, and they had eight children there. Thomas died suddenly, aged 47, of cholera, in Madras and there is a memorial tablet to him in the Cathedral. Eliza had moved by 1851 to Portland Place, in Brighton, with all her children, and then to Jersey to join other members of her family.
Of her eight children, the eldest, also Thomas, became a Major-General, and the other three sons all rose to Colonel. Two of their four daughters married military men.
Maitland entered Sandhurst Military Academy in 1857 and was commisioned in 1858. In 1861 Lieutenant Maitland Moore-Lane was living at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Hougham, in Kent.
Maitland married Georgina Mildred (nee Cooke) in Clifton, Bristol, in 1869. Georgina was born in Bristol, daughter of Isaac, a Solicitor, and Mary Cooke. Isaac Cooke was one of the Trustees of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which opened in 1864, and was also involved, as a Solicitor/Trustee, in various constructions in the Bristol area in the mid 1800s.
Lilian was born in Pendennis Castle, in Cornwall, then a Barracks of the Royal Artillery. The fort there had been neglected since the Napoleonic Wars, but in the 1850s, France and England were again in a race for military and naval advantage, and so more powerful guns were installed by the Royal Artillery.
In 1871 the Moore-Lane family was living in Pembroke Maitland and Georgina with daughters, Lilian and Rosalie Mildred, (born in Pembroke in 1871), and three house servants, a Nurse, Cook and Under-Nurse.
In 1881 Maitland, described as Captain, and Georgina, were Boarders in Northumberland Place, Paddington. Lilian, Elizabeth (born in Suffolk) and Rosalie, described as Officer's daughters, were Visitors in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in the Household of former Farmer's wife, Sarah Wigg.
Maitland was promoted to Major in 1881. He retired in 1883, with the Honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
By 1891 the Moore-Lanes were living in Cirencester. Colonel Maitland was also an Auctioneer and Estate Agent. Elizabeth and Lilian, were there too. There were also a Housemaid and a Cook.
In 1901 they had moved again, this time to Reigate. Georgina, living on her own means, plus Lilian, Rosalie and Elizabeth, all single, and one Housemaid. Maitland was then boarding in Sandown, Isle of Wight. He was commanding the Hants and IOW Artillery Militia. Boarding with him was Montagu Lane, a Second Lieutenant in the IOW Militia. (I haven't found any connection here.)
Elizabeth died in 1902, Georgina in 1908 and Rosalie in 1909.
In the 1902 Coronation Honours, Maitland was described as Lieutenant- Colonel and Honorary Colonel of the Duke of Connaught's Own Hampshire and Isle of Wight Royal Garrison.
In 1911, Lilian was living in Seaford with her father and a Housekeeper. In 1915, when Maitland died, he was living at St Olaves, in Boundary Road. Probate was given to Lilian. He left her just over £148.
When Lilian died, in 1936, she was living at 88 Heene Road. She died at Groombridge, in Chaucer Road.
