Life story

Life story

Mabel was born on 6th July 1884 in Ballycastle Ireland to Thomas Francis and Mary Anna Prowse. Mabel's Father was a Coastguard situated at the coast of Antrim and Donegal. He was also stationed at Port Ballantrae when the Portrush Lifeboat capsized and killed the Coxswain and the Chief Officer. He swam out to the lifeboat and assisted the remainder of the crew. For this he received a special gallantry medal by the RNLI and was promoted in the coastguard service. He took charge of a coastguard station in 1900 on the South Devon Coast, and as Chief Officer at Camber Station Dungeness before coming to Worthing in June 1907 and living at Cornwallis' 32 Wordsworth Road Worthing. He remained as Chief Officer in Worthing until he retired in September 1911. Mabel worked as a Lady's maid after she left school; she remained a spinster and lived all her life with her Parents in the family home. She died on the 8th February 1926 at Wordsworth Road of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Tubercular Larynx, her Father was in attendance. She left £165 (approx £6700 today) to her Father.
