Life story

Life story

Lydia Way was born in 1861 to Methodist parents, James, labourer, and Ruth (nee Read) Hawkins and baptised as a Bible Christian on 19 May . They were living with James parents, John, also a labourer, and Sarah in St Catherine Street, Godshill, Isle of Wight. Lydia became a chambermaid, one of a staff of 10 at the Marine Hotel, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. In 1892 she married Henry (Harry) Way , a coal porter, an Isle of Wight man, and they lived in his home town of Newport at Riverside. They had no children according to the 1911 Census but Richard C Way, described as' son, aged 15, lived with them in 1901. Lydia was widowed in 1913. She continued to live on the Isle of Wight. No Probate announcement was found so her death certificate was sent for. Her address was 6, Cross Lanes, Newport, Isle of Wight, at the time of her death from myocardial degeneration (which she had suffered from for 20 years) and cardiac failure. She never moved to Worthing. So why is she buried at Heene?  It was because she died at Nava Rutnam, 56, Grand Avenue, Worthing, which was run by John Andrew MRCS LRCP physician and surgeon. Presumably, this establishment specialised in heart conditions. There was no post mortem.
