Life story

Life story

Lucy was born in Wisborough Green, Sussex, the daughter of James and Elizabeth. She was baptised in the local church on 31st March 1844. Her father was a farm labourer. As a young woman, Lucy worked as a housemaid for one of the local farmers. In 1866, Lucy married George Scutt in Brighton. The Scutt family originally came from Wisborough Green and the pair probably knew each other. George and Lucy moved to Worthing where George worked as a lamplighter and gardener. The couple had ten children, five of whom were still living in 1911. After several moves in Worthing, the family finally settled in Milton Road. Lucy died at the end of July 1917. She was buried at Heene on 1st August. No probate.
