Lucy Mills (buried 1885)

Lucy Mills, born Goodger in January 1852 in Broadwater, West Sussex, was the daughter of Henry Goodger and Mary Lawrence. She was baptised in Broadwater aged 0 on February 1st 1852. On the baptism record, her mother's name is noted as Ellen (?middle name). In 1861, Lucy was 9 years old and living at 75 Montpellier Row, Washington, West Sussex, with her parents and siblings. She was noted as a Scholar. Her entry in the 1871 census is non-existent or non-traceable at this time. In April 3rd 1881, Lucy was living at 41 Brunswick Road, Heene, Worthing, with her parents and siblings. At the time of the census, Lucy was working as a bookkeeper clerk. It would 15 months later that Lucy would marry her partner, Joseph Bliss Mills, in Bethnal Green, London, on July 23rd 1882. At the time, Joseph was a tea dealer in London. They both moved in to 33 Colebrooke Row, Islington, N1, London and lived there for just over 3 years and 3 months when Lucy sadly contracted Typhoid Fever and died on Saturday 7th November 1885, aged just 33 years. The cause of death on the certificate was Typhoid Fever (41 days) and Exhaustion. Given the incubation period for Typhoid Fever, it would be likely that Lucy caught the infection between Friday 28th August 1885 and Monday 21st September 1885. There were no reported outbreaks in any local newspapers at the time. Lucy was returned to her childhood home of Heene and was buried in Heene Cemetery on November 12th 1885, where her parents Henry and Mary are also buried.
