Life story

Life story

Lucy was born in Liverpool, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Ann. She was baptised at St Margaret's Church, Toxteth on 29th August 1875. Her father was a riding master who died at the end of 1875. By 1891, the family had moved to Sussex, living in Uckfield for a while before moving to Brighton. Lucy's mother, twice a widow, had married Edmund Duckworth, a railway fireman and the family lived in London Road. Lucy worked as an apprentice pianoforte maker. On 19th November 1896, Lucy married Ernest Osgood Hanbury at the British Embassy in Paris. Ernest was a brewer and partner in Jude Hanbury and Co. He was divorced from his first wife in 1892. The couple moved to Worthing, living at "Amatola" in Shakespeare Road. They went on a World cruise in 1905, travelling to Hong Kong, Canada and the United States. Several winters were spent in Madeira. In 1924, the couple moved to "Hardwicke" in Tennyson Road. Lucy died on 19th December 1925. Probate was granted on 8th June 1926 to John Lucas Edwards gentleman and Selina Edwards. Effects £6428 10s 9d.

Ernest died in 1927 and was buried beside Lucy.
