Story
Louis aka Lewis was born in Longsight, Manchester, the son of Thomas and Harriet. His father was a plumber and glazier. At the age of thirteen, he and his brother Thomas were working as grooms in Gorton, Manchester. In 1885, Louis married Mary Ellen Bennett, the daughter of a local solicitor. Two years later, with two children, the couple moved to Worthing. Louis set up a dairy at his home “Cawwood Cottage” in Brunswick Road and called it “Salts Farm Dairy”. By the middle of the 1890’s, Louis had moved the dairy, now called “Woodward’s Creamery” to premises on the corner of Rowlands Road and Queen’s Road (33 Rowlands Road). Louis was a successful business man and a rival to Leal’s Creamery and Fuente’s in Rowlands Road. By 1907, Louis and Mary had lost five of their six children. Harold died in 1892, Nina in 1896, Dorothy in 1897, Mabel in 1904 and Leslie in 1912. Only Vera survived to adulthood. In 1910, Louis bought two properties in Heene Road and the following year another property in Sea View Road. These he let out. In 1915, Louis bought 25a Palmeira Mansions in Hove which he and Mary retired to around 1920.
He sold his creamery to Baines’ Creameries who had a business in West Worthing.
Mary died in 1928. Louis continued to live in Hove but made many visits to Worthing. He died suddenly at Worthing Station on 18 September 1935. Probate was granted on 22 November 1935 to Vera Constance Woodward. Effects £38896 0s 6d.

Obituary
Worthing Gazette 25 September 1935
“Former Businessman Sudden death at Worthing”
Formerly in business for many years as a dairyman in Rowlands Road, West Worthing, and lately a resident of Hove, where he lived alone in a flat in Palmeira Mansions. Mr Louis George Woodward died with tragic suddenness at Worthing Railway Station on Wednesday evening.
He had just arrived at the station and had hurried through the subway with the apparent intention of catching a train that was already standing by the “up” platform, when on reaching the top of the steps, he was seen to put his arm round one of the pillars and then fall. He was at once picked up and carried to a waiting room but died before a doctor arrived.
Mr Woodward who was 77 years of age had been under medical attention and in the circumstances the Coroner decided to dispense with an inquest.
The funeral took place on Monday at Heene, the interment in the family grave at Heene cemetery being preceded by a service at St Botolph’s Church conducted by the Rector, the Rev. E A Haviland.
