Life story

Life story

Lionel was born in Tottenham, the son of Francis and Anne Matilda. He was baptised at All Hallows Church, Tottenham on 29th July 1872. His father was a Professor of Mathematics at the City of London School. From the early 1880's until the Second World War, the family lived at 89 Lordship Park, Stoke Newington. On 1st December 1889, Francis died suddenly in St Augustine's Church, Highbury. The following year, Lionel graduated from the University College of Aberystwyth. He was apprenticed to a chemist at the White Lead Works in Southgate Road eventually becoming a manager. Lionel retired in 1936 and lived with his sister Bertha in Lordship Park. During the early part of the war, Lionel was an ARP Warden and First Aider. In 1940, Lionel's sister Winifred died in Worthing and Lionel moved into her house at 24 Mill Road with his brother Francis. Their other sister Matilda was living in Grafton Road. In July 1947, Francis was knocked down by a car in Marine Parade and died in hospital. Lionel died on 5th April 1949. Probate was granted on 5th May to Bertha Mabel Cuthbertson spinster. Effects £652 1s 7d.
