Life story

Life story

Lavinia was born in Chester, the daughter of John Thomas Trotter Pilkington and his wife Louisa Ann. She was baptised at St John's, Chester on 24 Aug 1853. In 1859, her mother died and Louisa was sent to live with her grandparents James and Mary Bell on the Isle of Man. She was joined later by her brother James. In 1874, Lavinia's father and brother Augustus were killed in the Shipton Railway accident on Christmas Eve. At the time, the family were living at Chevet Hay, Wrexham. Despite this tragedy, Lavinia married Thomas Ainsworth in Wrexham on 7 Jan 1875. She placed her wedding flowers on the family grave. The couple moved to Blackburn, where Thomas was a master at the local grammar school. In 1894, Thomas retired as headmaster of the school and he and Lavinia moved to Southport. Thomas died on 30 Oct 1898. The following year, Lavinia applied for a passport and went travelling. In 1903, she was in San Francisco and two years later in Philadelphia. Between 1918 and 1924, Lavinia was living at 19 Stratford Road, Kensington. She later moved to Harrow, living at 17a Grange Park. Lavinia died at the Homecroft Hotel, St Michael's Road, Worthing on 19 Apr 1934. Probate was granted on 15 May to Emily Ann Sparrow sister. Effects £484 9s 8d (approx.£25K in 2020).
