Life story

Laura Emily Howes was born on 1st October 1866 in Smithfield, London; she was the eldest daughter of John Howes, 28yrs, Grocer, and Eliza, 25yrs, nee Blackwell, she had 5 siblings.

Laura was a schoolmistress at the age of 24yrs, in 1891, 2 of her younger sisters were also pupil teachers, and they all lived at the family home in Camberwell, where her father was a grocer and cheesemonger.

On 31st July 1893, aged 26yrs, Laura married schoolmaster, Henry John Rogers, 25yrs, at St. Sepulchre's Church, Holborn, and they had a son, Howard Neville, in 1895. Laura and her husband continued their careers as schoolteachers in the Wandsworth area of London, and by 1921 they were both Head teachers.

Laura and John retired to Worthing, Sussex, living at 14, St. Valerie Road, where John died in October 1936. Laura remained at this address until 1941 when she married the Reverend John Samuel Treglown, 81yrs, at Holy Trinity Church on February 1st, and moved to 75, Boundary Road.

In August 1949, Laura was widowed again when her husband died suddenly, aged 89yrs.

Laura lived to the great age of 98yrs, she died on 22nd August 1965, her address at this time was Marlposts, Parkfield Road, Worthing. Probate was granted to Lloyds Bank Ltd., effects £19,670, value 2023 - £487,300.
