Life story

Life story

Laura Ellen Lidwell was born on 11th September 1857, and baptised at St. John's, Notting Hill, on 18th November 1857. She was the daughter of Joshua Edward Lidwell, 32yrs, a chemist, and Mary Ann Gardner, 36yrs, nee Draper.

In 1881, aged 23yrs, Laura was employed as a Lady Housekeeper by Daniel Ludgate Flack, 38yrs, a widower with 5 children, in Chepstow, Monmouthshire. The following year Laura married her employer at St. Stephen, Shepherds Bush, Hammersmith, on 3rd October 1882. They had 4 children, Mary b.1885, Dorothy b.1887, Charlotte b.1888, and Hugh b.1891, all born in Penarth, Glamorganshire.

Laura's husband was a shipping and export merchant, dealing in coal and fuel, and they lived in Wales for many years. By 1901 they were in Woking, Surrey, before moving to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Airedale, Boundary Road, Heene. Laura was widowed in 1920 when Daniel died, aged 77yrs, she continued to reside at Airedale, Boundary Road, where she died, on 24th January 1924, aged 66yrs.

Probate was granted to Frederick William Flack, farmer, effects £7135 2s 0d. Value 2022 - £462000.
