Life story

Life story

Katharine was born in Intwood, Norfolk, the daughter of Gibbs Howes Murrell and his wife Jane Anne. She was baptised at Ketteringham on 8th November 1846. Her father was a farmer but was declared bankrupt in December 1860. Katharine and her sisters were sent to live with their grandparents in Great Yarmouth. Benjamin Fenn was a JP and fish merchant. On 28th April 1874, Katharine married Brough Walter Girling, a banker's clerk, in Great Yarmouth. The couple lived in Islington and had six children. Sadly their son Benjamin died aged 2 in 1882. By 1891, the family were living in Wimbledon. After Brough retired, they moved to Buxted in Sussex. After the war in 1918, Brough and Katharine moved to Worthing, living at "Deltota" in Shakespeare Road. Their final move was to 27 Winchester Road, Worthing in 1924. Katharine died on 15th October 1926. Probate was granted on 27th November to Jane Anne Girling spinster. Effects £266 1s 10d.

Also buried at Heene is Brough and Katharine's grandson Hugh Richard Lant Carpenter. He died of meningitis aged 9 in July 1922. Their daughter Katharine married Hugh Carpenter. She died in Suez on 10th July 1921. Hugh Carpenter died on 28th March 1922 in Gibraltar.
