Life story

Kate Adames was born in Chichester, Sussex, she was baptised on 6th October. Her father was Benness Adames, 34yrs, Linen Draper, and her mother, Caroline, 34yrs, nee Shippham, they had 9 children between 15yrs 8 months, in 1841; Kate was the sixth child. Kate was schooled at home and lived with her family until her marriage in 1866 when, aged 30yrs, she married James Henry Weale, on 10th April at St. Peter's the Less, Chichester. James, also a Draper, had a business in Guildford High Street and this was where they lived and had 8 children, Ethel Kate, 1867, Kathleen Maud, 1868, Henry Frank, 1869, and Hilda Mary, 1870, Raymond Benness, 1872, Gilbert Joseph, 1874, Ruth Adames, 1875, and James Lloyd, 1877.

Kate was widowed on 19th February 1881 when James died, aged 44yrs, he left her about £1m. (2021 value). She moved to Farnham Road, Guildford with her children and remained there for the next 30 years. At some time after 1911, Kate moved to Worthing, living at Hartley, Shakespeare Road, where she died, on 28th June 1922, aged 87yrs.

Probate was granted to Ethel Weale, spinster, and Joseph Adams, JP.  Effects £3806 14s 1d. Value 2021 - £217K.
