Story
Kate Valentine Moon was born on 14th February 1882 in Hove, Sussex. She was the daughter of Thomas William Moon, 29yrs, an assistant in the wine trade, and Katharine Josephine Moon, 21yrs, nee Singleton, she had 4 siblings, Thomas E. b.1878, Eva b.1883, Maria b.1885, and Guy b.1887. In 1891 her father was a publican in Brighton running the Union Inn, Gloucester Road. When Kate was 12yrs old, her mother applied for, and was granted, a judicial separation from Kate’s father. *
In 1901, aged 21yrs, Kate (known as Kitty) was employed as a governess to the Eccles family in Sackfield Road, Hove. In 1906 Kate was living at 36, Bridge Road, Worthing, and on 16th June that year, she married Kenneth Carrington Ness, 29yrs, a dental surgeon, at Trinity Church, Hampstead, London. They lived in Finchley Road, Golders Green, London NW, and in 1907 their son, Ian Donald Kenneth Ness was born.
Kate’s husband had a great-aunt in Worthing, known as Madame Angela Eliza Brunet, she died in 1931 and he was granted probate of her estate, valued at £1.3m (2021 value). Shortly after, Kenneth retired and he and Kate moved to 88, Wallace Avenue, Worthing, a property they called The Little Manor.
In 1941 Kenneth died, aged 64yrs, leaving her his estate, £1.4m (2021 value). Kate remained in Worthing, she was living at 40, Mill Road, when she died, aged 87yrs, on 27th January 1968.
She left estate of £27903. Value 2021 – £508K.

Kate Josephine Singleton and Thomas William Moon – parents of Kate Ness
Kate Josephine Singleton married Thomas William Moon in 1878, she was 19yrs and he was 27yrs. Thomas’s father was a wine merchant, and he was his assistant. They had 5 children over the next 9yrs, the youngest being born in 1887. According to the court papers, Thomas had begun an affair in 1887 which was still ongoing in November 1892 when the application for a judicial separation was made, and the case was uncontested. The application was granted in February 1893, Kate’s mother was awarded custody of the children, and her legal costs of £31 17s 9d, (2021 value – £4,100). Thomas Moon had court costs of £25. (2021 value – £3,300). Kate was also entitled to future relief.
