Story

Kate was born in Rochford, Essex, the daughter of William and Sarah Ann nee Bentell. She married Henry Petrie Graveson, an Indian Army officer on 6th August 1890 in Mhow, Bengal, India.

A daughter Eleanor Dorothy Ida was born on 14th February 1903 and baptised in Mhow on 21st March.

Sadly she died on 24 September 1906 aboard the troopship SS Assaye and was buried at sea near Bombay.

On the Graveson stone in Heene cemetery her father refers to her as “his darling daughter Doris”. Kate and Henry may have had another child.

In a photograph of Eleanor, shown in a pram in the care of an Ayah and another Indian servant, there is a boy of about 4 years old but he could not be verified as their son.

When Henry retired from the Army, he and Kate lived in Kendal, his home town. At some point they moved to 112 Heene Road, Worthing where Henry died in 1932. By 1939, Kate had moved to the Fortescue Hotel, 41 Wordsworth Road, Worthing. She died aged 94 at St Francis Nursing Home, Church Street, Littlehampton but her home address was a London one, 90 Mount Nod Street, London SW16.  Probate was granted on 11 February 1958 to Lloyds Bank Limited.
