Life story

Life story

Julia Charlotte Bateman was born on 30th June 1844 in Tyfield, Essex; she was the daughter of Charles Bateman, 36yrs, Dissenting Minister, and Caroline, 36yrs, nee Finch. Caroline was 1 of 8 children, having 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

On 11th December 1869, aged 24yrs, Julia married John Chilcott, 22yrs, a tailor, at the non-conformist Pavement Chapel, Hackney, Middlesex. Her husband worked for Messrs. Foster, of Oxford for many years, becoming a Foreman Tailor before moving to Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, where he carried on a high-class tailoring business and was considered one of the best tailors in town.

They had 6 children, Gertrude b.1871, Ernest b.1872, Ethel b.1873, Rose b.1878, William b.1882 and Alex b.1886.

In 1891, Julia and John were living in Milverton, Warwickshire, John was now a Master Tailor and in 1901 he was running a gents' outfitters shop and his son William was also a tailor. He sold the business in 1905 but continued as manager for the new owner, working well into his sixties. Julia was widowed in 1924, and she died, aged 89yrs, on 19th November 1933 in Worthing, Sussex.
