Life story

Life story

Juanita Grace Betteley was born in 1869 in Valparaiso, Chile, S. America. She was the daughter of William Ravenscroft Betteley and Maria Lavinia, nee Brady. The Betteley family had a business in Valparaiso, Chile, where they were Iron and Hardware Merchants and Importers of Iron and General Goods.  Juanita had 5 siblings; when she was 12yrs old and known as Nita, she and her sister, Amy, were at boarding school in Essex.

On 27th October 1896, Juanita, 27yrs, married Charles Anthony Pike, 35yrs, at Dawlish in Devon, where he had a residence; he was a manufacturer of leather dressings. In 1901 they lived in Fulham, and in 1903 their son, John Ravenscroft Pike, was born. By 1911 they had settled at 57, Finchley Road, Westcliffe, Essex, Charles was  now working in the Nitrate of Soda Industry.

Juanita then suffered two tragedies - her brother, William Lawrence Betteley, came from South America to serve in the 1914 War with the Somerset Light Infantry, and he was killed in action in France in 1917, and in 1918 her son, John, died, aged 15yrs. in Devon.

The following year, Juanita died, aged 50yrs, on 27th November 1919 at the Caer Gwent Nursing Home, Wykeham Road, Worthing. Probate was granted to Charles Anthony Pike, Gentleman, effects £428 2s 8d. Value 2021 - £23000
