Life story

Life story

Joseph was born in King William's Town, Cape Colony, South Africa. His father William was a quartermaster sergeant in the 3rd Battalion Artillery. Shortly after Joseph's birth, William, his wife Elizabeth and son moved to India where Joseph was baptised at Benares, Bengal on 13th February 1852. William died in 1854 and Elizabeth married again in 1859. She died of a fever in 1870. Joseph spent most of his working life in India. He became a tea planter and managed a tea estate in Darjeeling. Joseph returned to England in 1890 and married Mary Jane Scott Cole at St Saviour's Church, Eastbourne on 8th December. Her father John worked for the British Army in the Ordnance Dept. Joseph and Mary Jane sailed for Calcutta after the wedding but Mary Jane returned to England the following year to give birth to her daughter Lilian on 2nd December. Lilian was baptised at St Saviour's Church, Eastbourne on 3rd February 1892. The family's address was given as Darjeeling. In 1894 Joseph retired and the family returned to England for good. They lived at 19 Bryanstone Road, Crouch End but by 1901 were living in Battersea. The family settled in Wimbledon for over 10 years until the 1920's. In 1921, Lilian married Capt. Victor Robert Fletcher and moved to Worthing living at "Cairo" in Bath Road. Joseph and Mary Ann were living in Lancing at "Rothwood" Kings Road by 1925. Joseph died on 16th August 1925 whilst at the home of his daughter in Bath Road. No probate.

After Joseph's death, Mary Ann moved in with her daughter and son-in-law. She died in Chichester in 1942.
