Life story

Life story

Joseph was born in Cottesbrooke, Northants, the son of Richard and Fanny. He was baptised in the village on 7th November 1847. As a young boy, Joseph worked with his father on the land as a labourer. By 1871, his father had died and Joseph was working as a groom. On 9th April 1872, Joseph married Sarah Staveley at Richmond in Surrey. On the marriage certificate, he is described as a coachman living in Richmond. For a while, the couple lived in Richmond and had three children, Emily, Florence and Sarah. By 1885, the family had moved to Worthing, living in Milton Street above the stables. By 1891, Joseph was running his own business as a fly proprietor. Joseph and Sarah had four more children, Richard Percy, Charlotte, Albert and Elizabeth. In 1900, Joseph claimed compensation from the local council and was awarded £14 10s after his horse and cart were damaged by a defective surface water drain in Queen's Road. The family continued to live at 3 Milton Street until Joseph's death on 15th April 1918. No probate.
