Life story

John William Watts was born in Leicester, in 1854, to George Watts, 28yrs, Castle Keeper, and Anna, 25yrs. He had 2 siblings, George b.1848, and Sarah b.1860.

In 1876, aged 22yrs, John married Sarah Jane Capey, 23yrs, also born in Leicester, they had 4 children, Florence A. b.1878, Gertrude E. b.1880, Frank E. b.1882, and John E. b.1893. John had begun his career as a clerk and at 26yrs he was a collector of rates; over the next 20 years he progressed to an assistant overseer and general district rate collector. His son, Frank, meanwhile, having been a house and estate agent from the age of 19yrs, became a property auctioneer and in 1911, his father and younger brother, John, both worked as auction assistants.

At some point after 1911, John and Sarah moved to Worthing, Sussex, where Sarah died, in 1917, aged 62yrs, and John died, in 1939, aged 85yrs.
