Life story

Life story

John Tilbury was born in Chesham, son of Richard Tilbury and Elizabeth (nee Puddifoot).

In 1841 father Richard was a Butcher, the family living in Little Missenden. John was the 5th child in the family.

In 1851, John was in Botley, Buckinghamshire a Shepherd for Farmer William Puddephat and family from Chesham.

At the age of 32, John married Elizabeth Ann Ghrimes at Ringwood in 1879. They had one son, John W Tilbury, who was born in 1884, which means that his father would have known about a child but never saw him, having died in 1883.

Elizabeth was the sister of William Alexander Ghrimes, one of John Tilbury's executors.

John was a nurseryman employing a man and 3 boys at The Graperies in Broadwater. He died of typhoid fever and perforation of the bowel at the age of 45 and was buried at Heene on 4 October1883.
