Life story

John Simpson was born in North Burton, Yorkshire, on March 11th, 1835, to William and Ann Simpson, he had two older brothers, Richard 9yrs, and Robert 8yrs; his father was a Farmer. When he was 25yrs old, he was an Assistant Draper at 27/28 High St., Guildford, Surrey; the shop was owned by 60yr old Thomas Horn, Linen Draper, also from Yorkshire, and eventually, John Simpson took over the business.

In 1871, aged 35 yrs. he married Emily Hall, 21yrs, at Eton, Burnham, Buckinghamshire. In 1891, John and Emily, were living at Burlington House, Semaphore Road, Holy Trinity, Guildford, with 3 children, Albert John, 14yrs, Charles, 10yrs, and Ruby, 4yrs.

By 1901, the family had moved to 76, North Street, Guildford, with sons, William 27yrs, Albert John 24yrs, and Ruby 13yrs.

Shortly afterwards, John retired, and moved to Worthing, with Emily, Albert, and Ruby, they lived at Wye House, Downview Road, where John died, on 12th October 1903, aged 68yrs. Probate was granted to Emily Simpson, widow, Ernest Simpson, Draper, Albert John Simpson, and Arthur Henry Frewin, Gentleman. Effects £27593 12s 5d. Value 2020 - £3.3m.
