Obituary

Croydon Guardian and Surrey County Gazette 14th November 1908

"Death of Mr J D Peard"

Mr John Davis Peard, an old resident of Croydon and senior partner of the firm Peard and Son, solicitors died at Worthing on November 1st at the age of 67 and was buried at Worthing on Monday last. The late Mr Peard who was articled at Barnstaple, Devon, came straight up to London for his final examination and passed it with first class honours. He also had the distinction of carrying off the Law Society's Prize. He was not the oldest practising solicitor in Croydon but he had practised as a solicitor for a longer time than anybody else on the rolls in Croydon, having been admitted in 1862. For many years Mr Peard practised in London but some years ago he started an office in Croydon and then took his son into partnership. During the last few months however, he had bad health. He therefore relinquished his part in the practice and Mr Gater came in, the firm now being Messrs Peard and Gater. Although never taking any active part in public life, the late Mr Peard was on the Executive of the Croydon Registration Association for some years, and did a good deal of active work on behalf of the Conservative Party at the time that Sir William Grantham and Lord Pembroke contested the Croydon seat. Mrs Peard who survives her husband was for many years Dame President of the Grantham Habitation. The family consists of five daughters and one son.
