Life story

Life story

John was born in Northwich, Cheshire, the son of James and Ann. His father was a baker and confectioner and ran a shop in the High Street. John studied medicine at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a medical practitioner in 1883. He returned to Cheshire to practice, working in the area around his home town of Northwich. On 12th March 1901, John married Sophia Jane Loraine nee French at St John's Church, Chester. Sophia was a widow with two daughters. The family lived in Knutsford where a daughter Marjory was born in 1902. John died on 31st January 1921 at "The Dingle" in Manor Road (now no. 77) Worthing. Probate was granted on 12th April to Sophia Jane Hassall widow, George Sharon Loraine vice-president British Merchant Service League and John Henry Hassall police officer. Effects £28307 15s 7d.

Sophia moved to Cambridgeshire with her daughters. She died in November 1939.
