John Chappell was born in 1897 in Southwick, Sussex to Frederick Thomas Chappell 28yrs, a Brickmakers Labourer and Elizabeth Jane, nee Smith. In 1901 the family live at 11, Elm Grove, Worthing; John Chappell was 3yrs old and had 2 brothers, Frederick 5yrs. and William 1month. John Chappell died, aged 7yrs, on 21st May 1905 in Worthing. His death certificate gave the cause of death as "Bronco Pneumonia, Meningitis Exhaustion."
