Life story

Life story

The 1861 Census reveals that John, aged 2, (born 21 November 1858)  had a 5-year-old half- brother, Frederick Tomkins, but when their mother, Louisa, nee Hobson, married Robert Thomas Barry on 28 October 1858, she had described herself as a spinster.

Robert died on 18 March 1859. John went to boarding school in Belverdere Road, Penge, Surrey.

Louisa married Benjamin Batten Philp, a retired farmer, 26 years her senior, with children of his own, in 1863. John lived with them at Elm House, Harlington, Middlesex. At this time he had no occupation being a gentleman with interest on money.

By 1891 John was a barrister and lodging with a widow and her sister at 17, Great College Street, Westminster.

In 1908, at the age of 48, he married Cecilia Glasspoole from Norfolk. By 1911 they had a child and had moved to Conewood, Valencia Road, Worthing, where John died on 22 July 1923. His effects, in 2020 would be equivalent to about £750,000.
