Life story

Life story

John was born in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, the son of William and Mary. His father was a bricklayer. On 28 May 1855, John married Betsy Lambert in Thorney. They had eight children between 1857 and 1878. By 1871, the family were living in London where John was working as a bricklayer with his son Henry. The family had moved to Worthing by 1881 where John had his own business as a builder employing 22 men including two of his sons. In 1890, John was appointed Overseer to the Poor in Heene. Besides his building trade, he was Manager of West Worthing Baths offering "cheap private baths every evening to 8pm for working men or women." John was also manager of the local waterworks. Over the next few years, he built several villas in the Heene district. By 1895, John had taken up fruit growing and floristry, managing West Worthing Nurseries in Rowlands Road. He died on 10 Feb 1898. Probate was granted on 1 Mar to Arthur Ashling and Robert W Charles solicitor. Effects £5330 19s.
