Life story

Jane Douglas Lawrie was born on 3rd August 1843, she was baptised at Holy Trinity, Low Moor, Yorkshire, on 19th October 1843. Her parents were, Alexander Lawrie, 36yrs, Royal Naval Engineer, and Ann Earl, 37yrs, nee Douglas; she had 2 siblings, James b.1845, and Matilda b.1849. When Jane was very young the family moved to Kent where her father was based at HM. Dockyard, Chatham. Jane remained single until 1895, when, aged 52yrs, she married widower, Francis Henry Parsons, M.D, 58yrs, on 29th July at St. Saviour's, Paddington.

Francis had been resident in Worthing, Sussex, with his late wife, for over ten years, he was a prominent member of the community, but no longer a practising doctor, Jane and Francis lived at his property, The Hurst, in St. Botolph's Road.

In 1905 Francis died, aged 68yrs. Jane inherited his estate (£1.5m. 2021 value) there being no children from his first marriage, and she lived alone at The Hurst for the remainder of her life. She died on 22nd September 1923, aged 80yrs, probate was granted to Mabel Jane Russell, widow, effects £2358 8s 2d. Value 2021 - £146K.

The Last Will and Testament for Jane Parsons was dated 1st July 1906.
