Life story

Life story

Jane Notley (nee Glanville) was born in 1848 in Lawhitton Cornwall to William and Grace Glanville.  Lawhitton is ½ mile from the border of Cornwall and Devon, close to the river Tamar. Jane's Father  William worked as an agricultural labourer, they lived at the Rector's cottage, Lawhitton. In 1861 they are living at the Parsonage Cottage in Lawhitton.

In 1871 Jane had left home along with her sister Fanny and both were servants to Elizabeth Turner, who was living at 39 Sussex Gardens, Paddington, Middlesex. Fanny was a Lady's Maid and Jane was a Cook.

Jane married Lewis Notley  on 17th January 1874 in Paddington, Middlesex.

They had 4 children-

Lewis Glanville born 1874 Holloway Middlesex

Frederick Glanville born 1876 Camberwell Surrey

Ethel Mary born 1885 Camberwell Surrey

Ellen Louise born 1887 Camberwell Surrey died 26th June 1903 Worthing Sussex

Lewis worked as a carpenter in 1881, then by 1891 he was working as a Builder and contractor, he was an employer with a Building and Contracting business.  He was also a councillor and chairman of the public health committee.  In 1902 Lewis was appointed as a committee member for the arrangements of the Kings Dinner in Camberwell.  This was a meal arranged for the poor and each committee member had to submit names from their ward.  There were also processions and street decorations organised.  The family lived at 260 Barry Road, Dulwich, Camberwell, London in 1891.

Then according to the 1901 census they had moved a couple of doors down to 254 Barry Road, where they stayed until 1921. However, the probate record shows that they had moved to Marmion 22 Salisbury road, Worthing by the end of 1921, where Lewis died on 30 December 1921. He left £22382 10s 9d (£650,369 in 2020) with probate to Frederick Glanville Notley (his son) and Harold George Cryer. Jane Notley died in 1920 in East Preston, Sussex, there is no probate record for her.
