Life story

Life story

Jane Wells Chapman was born in Edingburgh, Scotland, on 15th November 1866. Her parents were, Henry Chapman, 33yrs, Wine and Spirits Merchant, and Jane Chapman, 27yrs, nee Wells.

On 20th October 1886, Jane married Walter Davison Grinley, 27yrs, at St. Peter's, Deptford. They moved to Beckenham, Kent, Walter was a manufacturer of ladies' underclothing. They had 4 children, Geoffrey Chapman, b.1888, Gladys Mary, b.1890, Walter G.b.1898, and Nora Katherine b.1901. Walter was in partnership with William Lucas, and they employed over a hundred workers in Red Lion Square, London. In 1911 the family was in Sutton, Surrey, and in Carshalton, Surrey, in 1921.

At some point Walter and Jane moved to Worthing where they lived at Inkerman's Residential Hotel, Shelley Road, and Walter died, aged 69yrs, on 31st January 1929. In 1939, Jane was living in Torquay, Devon, at the Foxlands Hotel, and on 1st July 1945, she died, aged 78yrs, in Devon.
