Life story

Life story

Jane Hoare Dunstan was born in Bromley-by-Bow, Middlesex, the daughter of James and Elizabeth. She was baptised at St Leonard and St Mary church, Bromley-by-Bow on 4th April 1836. Her father was the vestry clerk. On 11th February 1858, Jane married Edward Marriott Vane at St Leonard and St Mary church, Bromley-by-Bow. Edward was a master ship rigger. The couple moved to Stepney and had two children, Herbert Dunstan and Harry Marriott. Edward died on 5th October 1862 leaving an estate of approx. £1500. On 19th June 1867, Jane married James Ripley Collins, a widower, at St Paul's church, Canonbury. James was clerk to the Guardians at Poplar Union Workhouse. By 1891, James had retired after a stroke which left him paralysed. He died in Hackney in 1898. Jane moved to Tunbridge Wells with her stepdaughter Isabella. By 1914, Jane and Isabella had moved to Worthing, living firstly at "Warrawee" Manor Road and then at 32 Wordsworth Road. Jane died here on 3rd March 1923. Probate was granted on 19th April to Sydney Hoare Collins lecturer and Herbert Ripley Collins bank clerk. Effects £4660 1s 7d.
