Jane Elizabeth Benham was born in April 1856 in Nately Scures, Hampshire, to Charles and Jane Benham (nee Dolton).
In 1861, Jane Elizabeth was 5 years old living at 'in the lane, Up Nately' in Nately Scures, Hampshire, and was noted down to be a 'scholar'.
In 1871, Jane was 15 years old and living at 'Cottages at the end of Up Nately Road', still in Nately Scures. She is still noted as a 'scholar'.
In 1881, Jane was a cook (unemployed) on the census and was staying at her younger sister's and brother-in-law's home as a visitor. Her sister was Elizabeth Scutter (nee Benham) and her brother-in-law was Alfred Scutter. They were living in Basing Road, Basingstoke.
In 1891, Jane was a 'tailoress' living at 3 Windover Street, Basingstoke, living with her mother who is now widowed.
In 1901, Jane is a housekeeper on the census and is in West Ham, Essex, working for the Edmonds family at 31 Chesterton Road. A some point in the next 5 years, Jane went down to Worthing, West Sussex, potentially for convalescent or visiting purposes and it was whilst she was there in 1906 that she died and was buried in Heene Cemetery on the 4th July 1906, aged 50 years.
