Life story

Life story

James was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, the son of David and Elizabeth. He was baptised in Tring on 13th August 1837.

As a young man, James worked in stables for a smith in Willesden. His work with horses continued as by 1861, he was a whipper in and groom.

On 6th May 1862, James married Mary Ann Edwards in Tring. The couple lived above the kennels at Kineton House in Warwickshire where James worked as a huntsman. They had three boys, Joseph, Harry and Ernest.

By 1881, the family were living in Hemel Hempstead where James worked as a groom.

Mary Ann died on 10th January 1898. The following year, James married Fanny Stratford a widow, at Berkhamsted.

In 1900, James died at 32 Elm Grove, Worthing on 20th April. Probate was granted on 27th June to Fanny Young widow and Ernest Crosier Young schoolmaster. Effects £237 4s 10d. Fanny returned to Tring.
