Life story

Life story

James was born in Cove, near Yateley in Hampshire. His father William was a potter. James moved away from Cove before 1861 and worked in Berkshire as a footman at Stanford Place House near Farringdon. It was here that he met Fanchette Moynat, a girl from Switzerland who was working in the house as a lady's maid. Fanchette, known as Marie, married James at St George's Church, Hanover Square in London on 13th March 1861. The couple found positions working for an elderly banker in Westminster. They had two children, William and Adeline and the family lived on the premises. Marie died on 31st May 1877 and was buried in Brompton Cemetery. James moved to Clapham with his children and worked as a clerk for a firm making machinery. William worked for a bank eventually becoming a manager. By 1891, the family were living in Tonbridge, Kent and employing a servant. After James retired, they moved firstly to Dorking and then to Worthing. James married Fanny Silvester on 14th June 1906 at West Tarring church near Worthing. The couple settled at "Glen Lyn" in Harrow Road, Worthing. James died on 11th January 1913. Probate was granted on 23rd January to William Louis Wickens and William Henry Brice, bank managers. Effects £254 1s.

Fanny was about twenty years younger that James. She stayed in Worthing, dying in 1941.
