Life story

Life story

James was born in West Grinstead, Sussex, the son of James and Harriet. He was baptised there on 30 Nov 1873. In 1875, his mother died. His father married again in 1878, his new wife being Mary Newman. By 1891, James had left home and was working on a farm at Lower Beeding. In 1898, he married Alice Foster at Billingshurst on 31st October. The banns were called at West Tarring church in the three weeks before the wedding. Their first son, Bernard Alec James was born in Worthing and baptised at West Tarring on 29 Oct 1899. The family lived for a while at Fullers Cottages in Ashacre Lane, Salvington. James worked for a local dairy delivering milk. Six of the children born to James and Alice survived childhood. They were Reginald born in 1901, Doris born in 1903, Eric born in 1905, Elsie born in 1908 and Eileen born in 1910. In 1908, the family were living at 3 Rugby Terrace, Rugby Road (later no. 74). James died on 23 May 1910 of double pneumonia and cardiac failure. On his death certificate, he is described as a gardener (not domestic).He was buried at Heene on 26 May. No Probate.

Alice took a job as caretaker at Elm Grove School. She died in 1957 and is buried at Durrington Cemetery, Worthing. Bernard was killed in France in August 1918. His name is on the Heene and Worthing War memorials.
