Story
James was born in Clerkenwell, London, the son of William Henry and Louisa nee Smith. His father was a jeweller and goldsmith and his mother worked as a bonnet maker. Louisa died in 1858. James didn’t follow his father into the jewellery business but trained as a butcher, later opening his own shop in Islington. James married Elizabeth Ann Taylor (sometimes known as Ann) at St Mary’s church, Islington on 16th December 1866. The couple had five children but sadly both boys died young (Arthur James b 1870 d 1871. James b & d 1873) leaving Elizabeth Jane b1868, Alice Ada b 1872 and Rose Beatrice b 1877. By 1881, the family had moved to Lambeth where James ran a grocers and cheesemongers. In 1898, the family moved to Worthing where James opened a shop at 2 & 3 Brunswick Esplanade. The shop was in a row of buildings on the east side of what became Thorn Road. Before 1911, James ceased trading and the family moved to 12 Thorn Road. It was here that his wife Elizabeth died on 9th May 1918. James continued to live at 12 Thorn Road. He died at his daughter’s home in Winton, Bournemouth on 1st January 1932. Probate was granted on 9th February to James Tolhurst cashier. Effects £1271 14s 5d. James Tolhurst was married to Rose Beatrice Sainsbury.
