James Rumsey (buried 1901)

When James was born he lived with his family in Maidenhead in Berkshire, but by 1871 the family had moved to Hove Sussex. James's Father was a vicar, but described as a Graduate of Cambridge, without the cure of souls'. This means he was ordained but because he may have been well off didn't have to earn a living working on the Parish Duties. James got a job in the stock exchange in London as a clerk (clerks were not necessarily members of the stock exchange but some could transact business on the floor of the exchange by approval). In July 1881 he married Isabella Turner in Islington (born 1858 Dane Hill Sussex). They had 3 children Isabella (born 1880 Dane Hill Sussex) she married Reginald Long in 1906 and had 1 Son called Richard. Florence (born 1884 London) she married Frederick Searle in 1906 and had 1 Daughter Audrey. Caroline (born 1889 Sandown Isle of Wight) she married Saumarez Ewan Nott (born 1885 Hendon Middx) he joined the 13th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment but was killed in action at Ypres Belgium on 9th September 1917 The family moved to the Sandown Isle of Wight where James was still working as a clerk. James's Father died in 1898 and left his estate of £7558 (£680,000 today) to his two Sons James and Carrick. However their two sisters, Florence and Adela filed a law suit claiming the will had not been duly executed. The Brothers produced the handwritten will which they claimed was written by their Father on 18th August 1897. In the end the judge agreed the will and the Sisters lost the case. By 1901 the family have moved to Harrow Road Worthing. James is no longer working and is living on his own means. James died on the 5th April 1901 at Harrow Road Worthing of Cirrhosis of the liver and fatty degeneration of the heart, his wife Isabella was present at the death. James left an estate of £2425 (about £300,000 in today's money) to Isabella. Isabella died on 30th August 1929 and is also buried in Heene Cemetery
