James Webb Mills was born on 5th November 1881 in Worthing. His father, George Jonathan Mills, was a wealthy land and property developer, aged 60yrs, his mother, Georgiana nee Riches, 33yrs. He had 3 older siblings, Georgiana 6, William 5 and Jean 2, they lived at 33, Gratwicke Road, Worthing. James had an older half-brother, George J., 37yrs. At the age of 10yrs, James was a boarder at Southey Hall School in Worthing. Later, he was a student at Dover College Public School and in his will, he bequeathed several pieces of antique silver to the College to be awarded as annual prizes for poetry. In 1902 James was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London, by patrimony, as he was entitled under his father's admission in the Company of Fishmongers, in 1858.
James studied at Cambridge University before being ordained into the Church, he subsequently served as a curate at All Saints, Finchley Road, London and at Holy Trinity, Taunton, Somerset .
James Webb Mills, Clerk in Holy Orders, died at Colville, Gratwicke Road, Worthing, aged 69yrs, on 30th August 1950. He was unmarried.
