St.Luke 24.29" Also of Georgiana his wife who entered into rest January 16th 1913 aged 65 "Then they ar glad because they are at rest and so he bringeth them into the house where they would be. Psalm 107.30" In loving memory of James Webb Mills, Priest, born 5th February 1881 died 30th August 1950 "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. Psalm 121.1" In loving memory of Robert Henry Mills who entered into rest January 10th 1963 aged 77 years "Love was the hallmark of his life"

Life story

James Webb Mills was born on 5th November 1881 in Worthing. His father, George Jonathan Mills, was a wealthy land and property developer, aged 60yrs, his mother, Georgiana nee Riches, 33yrs. He had 3 older siblings, Georgiana 6, William 5 and Jean 2, they lived at 33, Gratwicke Road, Worthing. James had an older half-brother, George J., 37yrs. At the age of 10yrs, James was a boarder at Southey Hall School in Worthing. Later, he was a student at Dover College Public School and in his will, he bequeathed several pieces of antique silver to the College to be awarded as annual prizes for poetry. In 1902 James was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London, by patrimony, as he was entitled under his father's admission in the Company of Fishmongers, in 1858. James studied at Cambridge University before being ordained into the Church, he subsequently served as a curate at All Saints, Finchley Road, London and at Holy Trinity, Taunton, Somerset . James Webb Mills, Clerk in Holy Orders, died at Colville, Gratwicke Road, Worthing, aged 69yrs, on 30th August 1950. He was unmarried. Probate was granted to his brother, Robert Henry Mills, retired chartered surveyor, and solicitor, David McBeth Moir Carey. Effects - £83028 0s 5d. Value 2020 - £2.8m.

Obituary

Worthing Herald – Friday 1st September 1950. On August 30th, 1950 at Colville, Gratwicke Road, after a long illness, bravely borne, James Webb Mills, M. A. Priest. Requiem 9am. and funeral service at 2.30pm. St. Andrew’s Church, September 4th, followed by interment at Heene Cemetery.

The Will of the Reverend James Webb Mills

He founded a charity to augment the stipends of the clergy and it is still a functioning charity in 2020, known as "The Reverend James Webb Mills for The Augmentation of The Benefice of Kedington". Among other bequests he left £300 each to the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and the hospital of Saints John and Elizabeth, St. John’s Wood, "conditional upon a Requiem Mass being said for the repose of his soul on the anniversaries of his birthday and death day".
