Life story

Life story

James was born in Bermondsey, London the son of James Edmund Mahoney who was a waterside labourer. James's mother Ellen had been born in Ireland. The family lived in Warford Place, Bermondsey. As a young man James worked as a "chain boy". This meant he was responsible for the condition and availability of the "chain" which was used for measuring land and for holding it accurately whilst the surveyor recorded the distance. One chain was 22 yards (66 feet) and made up of 100 links each 7.92 inches (20.1 cm) long. James joined the Royal Navy on 1st November 1915 and his service record shows that he had become a policeman. He was 5ft 10ins tall, with dark brown hair, blue eyes, a fresh complexion and a scar on his right thumb. He served on "President II" twice and also on "Egmont" as a mechanic. His service number was F8979, his conduct "very good" and his physical condition "A1". He transferred to the RAF at the end of March 1918 and worked as a leading mechanic with a new service number 208979. James was discharged on 30th April 1920. On 27th December 1919, James married Daisy Ann Watts of 110 Marine Parade, Worthing at Holy Trinity church. The service was conducted by the vicar Canon Charles Hollis. (Canon Hollis died in 1941 and is also buried at Heene). James returned to his former occupation of policeman. He and Daisy lived at 3 Chatham Road, Worthing for at least 36 years. James died on 28th March 1972 aged 81. No probate.
