Life story

Life story

James was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, the son of James and Margaret. He was baptised on 10th March 1844 in Kirriemuir. His father was a draper. James became his father's assistant, learning the business and by 1871, had a shop in Edgware Road, London. His brothers George and David worked with him. On 18th September 1872, James married Emily Field Lewis at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham. The couple moved to Willesden. By 1891, James had diversified from a linen draper to working as a ladies costumier. When James retired, he and Emily moved to Keymer in Sussex. After the war, they moved to Worthing, living at 26 Cowper Road. They worshipped at St Botolph's Church where James helped as a sidesman. His brother William who had also moved to Worthing, died in 1922 and is buried at Heene. James died on 28th June 1925. Probate was granted on 11th August to Frederick James Lawson physician, James Christian Eisenhuth Lawson retired engineer and Mabel Emily Lawson. Effects £38930 14s 7d. Re-sworn £39211 14s.

“Tribute to a Sidesman”

In a brief In Memoriam notice in the Heene Parish Magazine, it is declared that Mr James Lawson who was a sidesman at St Botolph’s for a good many years and who passed away at the age of 81, was “a valued member of our congregation, always interested and helpful, kindly and encouraging. We missed him this year at the Summer Fair at which he and his wife took a prominent past in years past. We sympathise with Mrs Lawson and family in their bereavement. “
