Life story

Life story

James was born in St George in the East, London on 2nd November 1822, to William Elliott, a cooper and his wife Ann nee Jenkins. James was a cooper at the time he married on 29th March 1850 at Stratford in Bedfordshire. His bride signed herself as Lydia Rosetta but appeared as Rosetta Lydia on subsequent Census records. Her maiden name was Bourne and her father was a bonnet manufacturer which no doubt influenced her to become a milliner. James and Rosetta had 6 children, 3 girls and 3 boys. James changed his occupation several times during his life. In 1850, he was a cooper, in 1851 a coffee house keeper, in 1861 a foreman of wine vaults, in 1871 a dock clerk, in 1881 a manufacturing bonnet maker, in 1891 he was living on his own means and in 1901 he was a retired bank clerk. He died on 5th July 1911, leaving £3521 14s 6d to be administered by one of his sons, Frederick John Elliott and a daughter, Susannah Lydia Elliott. At the time of his death, he was living at "Westfield" in Winchester Road, Worthing.
