Life story

Life story

Ivy Kathleen Hackney was born on 29th April 1888 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. Her father was Bernard Batigan Hackney, 43yrs, Barrister and Journalist, her mother was Alice, 39yrs, nee Remington. She was 1 of 7 children.  Her father was Editor of The Coventry Times and later managing director of The Rugby Advertiser; he agreed to purchase the Imperial Hotel, Southport, and was sued for breach of contract when he failed to complete the transaction. As a result, he was called before the London Court of Bankruptcy in 1909 although it didn't appear to harm his business career as in 1911, he was managing director of a linoleum company. Ivy's mother, Alice, also ran her own laundry business, and Ivy was a music teacher, the family lived in Sydenham, SE London.

When Ivy was 33yrs old, in 1922, she returned from a voyage to Lisbon, and the following year, she sailed to Las Palmas. During the 1920s she lived in Kensington and Lewisham, and in 1930, at the age of 42yrs, Ivy married the Reverend Edward Hutton Bell, 34yrs her senior, in Kensington. They moved to Worthing where they lived at 16, Lansdowne Close; Edward died just six years later, aged 82yrs, in 1936.

Ivy remained at their home in Lansdowne Close, for the remainder of her life, she died, aged 83yrs, on 22nd September 1971. She left estate of £13,197, value 2021 - £191K.
