Life story

Life story

Isabella was born in Poplar, Middlesex, the daughter of James Ripley Collins and his wife Cordelia. She was baptised at All Saints church, Poplar on 11th November 1860. Her father was clerk to the Guardians of Poplar workhouse. Isabella's mother died in 1862 and in 1867, James married Jane Hoare Vane, a widow, at St Paul's church, Canonbury on 19th June. Isabella was sent to a private school in Kent and later lived with her father and stepmother in Islington. By 1891, James had been paralysed by a stroke and died in 1898. Isabella continued to live with her stepmother Jane. The pair had moved to Worthing by 1914, living at "Warrawee" in Manor Road. Jane died in 1923 and was buried at Heene. By 1931, Isabella was living at "Crossgates" in Arundel Road, Worthing with her brother Sydney Collins. Isabella died at Seabrook Nursing Home, Queen's Road, Worthing on 22nd July 1931. Probate was granted on 12th September to Sydney Hoare Collins and Herbert Ripley Collins gentlemen. Effects £1782 3s 3d.
