Isabella Brooks (buried 1936)

Isabella was the daughter of John Henderson. At present it is not known where she was born or who her mother was. She spent most of her life in India only coming to England in 1922. Her sister Margaret was born in 1866 and is also buried at Heene. On 4th November 889, Isabella married Sergeant Samuel Brooks at the Cathedral in Lahore. He was serving with the Punjab Volunteer Rifle Corps. Samuel was a widower. His first wife Ellen nee Chill had died of smallpox aged just 20 in January 1889. A daughter Elsie Marguerite was born in 1890. She later became a midwife at Madras State Hospital. Elsie married Frederick John Newman (Fred). She was widowed in October 1918 and moved to England, living at 77 Goldsmith Road, Worthing. She died in 1959 and was buried in Durrington Cemetery. Isabella had three other children, Beatrice Winifred b1892; Wilfred Nowell Gerard b1895 d1896; John Wilmot Brooks b 1897. John was still living in India in 1926. He had married Nesta Evelyn and had a daughter Lorna Nesta Isabella. Samuel died in 1921 and the following year, Isabella travelled to England. She gave her address as c/o 21 The Steyne, Worthing. She moved in with her sister Margaret at 88 Heene Road, Worthing. Margaret died in 1928. Isabella stayed on in the house until her death in 1936. On the electoral registers she is variously named as Isabella, Isabella Bertha or Bertha Brooks. Isabella died in Portchester, Hampshire on 30th March 1936. Her daughter Beatrice now Mrs Cronin was with her. No probate.
