Life story

Life story

Herbert was born in Reading, the son of Colonel Charles Arkoll Porteous and his wife Catherine Sophia (Kate). Charles and his family were in India from about 1868. He was Inspector General of Police and highly respected. After he died, a fountain was erected in his memory in Chenai (now lost). Catherine returned to England before 1881 and took up residence in Hampstead with her children. Herbert trained as a doctor. In 1893 he joined an expedition to Russia and Siberia as a medical officer. The "Blencathra" sailed to the Kara Sea and then on to the Yenesei River. With the agreement of the Russian Government, the ship carried rails for the Trans-Siberian Railway. The expedition reached the Yenesei on 3 Sep and returned to England via Archangel in November. During the Boer War 1899-1901, Herbert served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in South Africa earning a medal and clasp. In 1902 Herbert married Mabel Elizabeth Bracey at St Mary's, Teddington on 17 Jul. A daughter, Joyce was born on 30 Apr 1903 followed by Kenneth in 1905 and Rosalind (Betty) in 1906. Herbert took up general practice in Chalford, Gloucestershire. He was taken to court in Jun 1910 accused of falsifying medical records (see copy of court record). He was bound over and discharged after pleading guilty. He resigned from his post in August 1912. In 1915, Herbert died at Camberwell House, Peckham Road, Surrey on 4 Mar. This was one of London's largest lunatic asylums and psychiatric hospitals. His death certificate stated that he died of "general paralysis of the insane". Probate was granted on 24th March to Humphrey John Bracey Esq. Effects £285 12s 6d.
