Life story

Life story

Herbert was born in Battersea, the son of Robert Thomas and Ellen Elizabeth. He was baptised at Battersea Christ Church, Wandsworth on 24 March 1895. His names are recorded as "Henry Herbert". Herbert's father was a bricklayer and stonemason. At the time of his baptism, the family were living at 16 Lavender Terrace, Battersea. By 1901, the family had moved to Worthing, living in a new house in Elm Grove (later no. 44). Herbert followed his father into bricklaying. In 1924, he married Ivy Burgess and the couple moved to 71 Newland Road next door to The Globe pub. They shared the house with a retired gentleman, James Jeal. Ivy acted as housekeeper. The couple had no children. On 25th July 1939, Herbert was visiting friends in Marlowe Road, when he collapsed and died in the garden.(see inquest below). No probate.

James Jeal died in 1940 and Ivy moved away.

Miscellaneous information

Worthing Herald 4th August 1939

"Worthing Bricklayer’s Death"

A verdict of "natural causes" was recorded at the inquest on Friday of Herbert Henry Brown, a bricklayer of 71 Newland Road, Worthing. It was stated that he suddenly collapsed and died while visiting friends in Marlowe Road the previous Tuesday evening.

The widow, Mrs Ivy Brown told the coroner (Mr F W Butler) that he had suffered from angina pectoris for two and a half years. Henry Thomas Roberts of 26 Marlowe Road, Worthing who was out in his garden with Brown after supper, said that Brown suddenly fell to the ground with a cry. He did not say a word.

Dr P C Cole said that the cause of death was syncope due to angina pectoris.
