Life story

Life story

Henry was born in South Croydon, the son of Henry and Emma Grace. He was baptised at Emmanuel Church, South Croydon on 18th November 1899. His father was a commercial traveller who died in 1905 aged just 32. Henry known as Claude, was sent to school in Hove. During the First World War, he served with 3rd Norfolk Regiment. In 1923, he married Frances Mary Gillespie. The couple lived in New Road, Durrington where Henry ran Rosslyn Nurseries. Their son Michael was born in 1925 and a daughter Jean in 1929. In May 1939, Henry was declared bankrupt but discharged in September. By then, the family were living in Belsize Road. During the war, Henry worked as a coal merchant and partner in C J Pead and Co, Plaza Parade, Worthing. In 1943, Henry was in court, accused of supplying coal without the necessary authority. He was fined £18 with 3 guineas costs. The family were still living in Belsize Road up until Henry's death in 1963. He died at Berkeley Lodge Nursing Home, 42 Shelley Road, Worthing on 1st December 1963. Henry was cremated and his ashes buried on 25th January 1964. Probate was granted on 1st April 1964 to Frances Mary Thompson widow. Effects £11772.
