Story
Henry was the only son of Robert, a Clerk, who had died by 1871, and Sarah (Whittren). Robert and Sarah were married in Bethnal Green in 1800.
Henry was baptised at St Magnus the Martyr and St Margaret in April 1817, in the City of London. The family’s address at the time was Church Yard Alley, part of the ancient Parish of St Magnus the Martyr, which is on the North bank of the Thames, near London Bridge.
In a History of Christ’s Hospital, in 1833, Henry is described as an ‘Usher in the Writing School’. This was a Second Master. Christ’s Hospital opened with 380 children in 1552 in a building in Newgate Street, London, formerly occupied by the Greyfriars. King Edward V1 became a Patron and Founder. It was a school for both boys and girls from the outset. Their first scholar was sent to Oxbridge in 1566. The great majority of children were educated in the Writing School for a position in commerce or trade leaving at 15. In 1845, while Henry was a Master, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert attended a Public Supper at the school.
The school transferred to Sussex in 1902.
In 1851, aged 34, Henry was a Lodger at a house in Finsbury. His occupation was given as ‘Writing Master’.
In 1861, Henry, still a ‘Writing Master’, was a Lodger in a house in Islington.
At the time of the 1871 census Henry was Head of Household at 55 Britain, Aldersgate, with his widowed older sister, Sarah Jesse, and a General Servant. His occupation was ‘Teacher of Writing.’ Sister Sarah died in 1874.
Henry married Sarah Easter Collinson in July 1871 in St Pancras. Sarah’s father Thomas was a Professor of Music, living in Regent Square. Sarah was born in Kings Lynn.
Henry was described as a ‘Writing and Arithmetic Master, Christ’s Hospital’ on the marriage certificate. He was then living at 55 Little Aldgate.
Living in 1881 at 55 Little Britain, Aldersgate, London were Henry, Writing Master (Christ’s Hospital), Sarah Easter Sharp, nee Collinson, wife, 39 and Rebecca Collier General Servant Domestic.
They had moved to Sunnyside, St Michael’s Road by 1889. (This is now No 7)
By 1891 Henry and Sarah were at ‘Glencoe’, a name change for the house, St Michael’s Road. Henry was described as a ‘Retired Writing and Arithmetic Master’. They had one Domestic Servant.
Sarah died in 1901, back in Kings Lynn.
