Henry was born in Halstead, Kent in 1835. He was baptised at St Margaret, Halstead on 8th November. His father Edward was an agricultural labourer and his mother was Mary nee Whitehead. Throughout his life, Henry moved frequently. In 1841, the family lived in Halstead but by 1851, they had moved to the village of Knockholt, Kent. Henry became a coachman in Hastings in the household of Robert Douglas Hale, a physician. Henry married Elizabeth Lead on 4th June 1868 at St Mary, Lambeth. Her father was a fireman at the Gas Works. In 1871, the couple were living in Hornchurch, Essex. By 1881, the family were in Deptford, later moving south to Camberwell. Henry died on 3rd December 1920 of senile decay aged 85. His son-in-law W A Taylor was by his side. He was living at the time at 37 Arundel Road, Littlehampton, the home of his daughter Mary and her husband George Steward who had originally lodged with the family . His wife Elizabeth had died a month earlier. No probate.

Henry and his wife were buried at Heene because his daughter Mary was laid to rest there after an operation for cancer in 1918. She died in a nursing home in Queen’s Road, Worthing.
