Henry was the son of William Hamper, 32yrs, Hosier, and Mary Ann, 30yrs, nee Thomson, he had 3 siblings, William b.1809, Mary Ann b.1811, and Ellen b.1814, the family lived in Aldgate High Street.

Henry's father died in 1838, the hosiery business was continued by his mother, brother, William, and Henry, who were living in Threadneedle Street, City of London. It eventually expanded from hosiery and gloves to outfitters and general shop.

In 1847, aged 30yrs, Henry married Caroline Harriett Mullins, 24yrs, in The Strand, London, they had 2 children, Laura Caroline, b.1850, and Harry, b.1852.

By 1861 the family had moved to Hampstead, where they lived for about 30yrs, Henry continued in the hosiery and outfitters business, later with his son, Harry. They traded as Hamper and Son, Old Broad Street, London, and in October 1895 went into receivership under the Bankruptcy Act.

Henry's daughter, Laura, had married a solicitor, Henshall Fereday, in 1880, they had 3 children and appeared to have all lived with her parents, joining them when Henry and Caroline retired to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Montague Place.
